Brand Birmingham update -

Due to the fact I spend most of my time in Leeds these days (I've been back to Birmingham twice this year), it would only seem appropriate to alter the Birmingham brief.

It isn't as simple as changing the name of location,
Leeds and Birmingham have very different histories, and, are quite obviously in different locations on the UK map. This means different accents, attitude, culture, music, places to go etc etc, all of which may alter the tone of voice and brand deliverables.

But I believe this will benefit me as being in Leeds most of the time would allow me to gather more primary research and if needed, could easily pop into the city centre to gather more information/photographs.

Like always, I will be posting all the research on my design context blog.

Fred's feedback from the 09/10 tutorials.

Fred's feedback from Tuesday's feedback. It alliterated that my rationale was too vague and what I thought sounded clear to me, was unclear to everyone else.

Brief notes

A few notes were made in the tutorial which made me reconsider a few of my briefs.

Architecture

- Don't get lost in the research
- Pick a specific style of architecture

- As a type driven designer - is this the sort of brief for you?
- Think about who your audience is and how could you get it out there?

Everyday

In hindsight this began to look a lot like my design context blog. It's basically doing the same thing so this brief needs to be scrapped.

Time plan.

Seeing how behind i was yesterday has made me realise just how important time-management is in third year. I'm not timetabled in as much as the previous years so I really need to manage my own time.
I've improved since last year/over the last 2 years but I still feel I don't have a strict enough structure to my day.

This is changing NOW

I've since started using calendar found on OSX software.

At the moment I'm planning my schedule a day in advance but this may become a weekly plan
as the year progresses.

9thOctober tutorial feedback. w/ Fred.

I arrived to the tutorial prepared and confident in what I wanted to say.
But when it was my turn to speak about my briefs I had difficulty explaining exactly what I wanted
to do in a concise manner. I was very vague. This was a classic example of "I know what it is in my head" but that's useless just highlights the fact I need to pin point EXACTLY what I want to do.

I need to stop the vagueness and narrow down the deliverables.
Another interesting point Fred made was the the fact every brief had a publication
amongst the list of deliverables so I also need to consider different methods of getting this information out there.

This all sounds quite negative but it's a good thing (in some respects)
It means I can move on and again, focus on what I really want out of this.
And why!

MY FEEDBACK

Typotecture

Design Development.

Open publication - Free publishing - More architect

I understand the fact that a huge chunk of this brief will be researched based
but I wanted to get some initial design going so I could show my tutorial group.

For this moment in time the brief is called TYPOTECTURE (fusing the words typography and architecture)
I started off just laying out type and working with heiriechy.
I then tried vasrious type treatments along with including images of buildings.
I also tried vectoring some simple line drawings of the buildings.

Again, this is just to get a feel of the direction I'm heading with this.

Brief # 3

Architecture / Interior Design.

Architecture and interior design has recently become a recent interest of mine.
I guess it's always been there and as a visual person, I like looking at "nice" things.
I love clean, effective and minimal design showing nothing but the functionality of the design
or the idea shines through.

TUMBLR -

Having a tumblr is a brilliant way of seeing all sorts of visual stimulai.
The posts I see and save to my desktop range from a new project by a design agency or
a new office that's been made.

It's not that surprising to find that Architecture/interior design and graphic design have quite a bit in common. I like to believe my design reflects the similar approach used by some architects.
The use of lines, angles and using the space is very important in both lines of work and I would love
to combine those into a brief.

Initial ideas.

Find a interior design/architecture student in Leeds and design an identity for said student.
This will include the usual stationary as well as catalogues and various printed material.

Publication.

As previously mentioned, I've been looking at quite a few blogs that post architecture/interior design
and the kind of design I found quite interesting are very modern and consist of clean and simple lines
and focus on Function over form I've been considering creating a publication on a number of Architects/designers.

This publication would contain interviews about their process (if I can get in contact)
and their views of current architecture/design out there. The publication would also include
examples of famous pieces of architecture.

Brief # 2

Translate the concept of No comment
onto a range of printed material as well as on screen through

No Comment focuses on events happening over the world.
Focus it more on the local Leeds area.

Logo may need updating.
Perhaps neutral type such as helvetica.

Tone of voice

Informative, strong

A DVD with indents
DVD packaging
Promotional material

Brief 1

Branding a local company.

Create a set of branded materials that capture the character
and personality of a chosen company, and communicate it to it's customers.

Concept / Proposition.

Choosing an existing, local company and refresh it's identity. By using the company's existing
logo or creating a new one where appropriate, communicate the character and unique selling point across a range of branded materials.

Background

Seeing as the brief will be primarily research driven, it's important
to get to the root of what makes that company tick.

You must communicate the character of your chosen company accurately.

Considerations.

What company are you going to choose?
Consider the range of companies that exist from charities to non profit organisations,
through to multinational brands.

What services/products does the company offer? What lifestyle are they trying to sell?
Who are the company's current customers? and why do they want to attract a new set?

What branded materials will be appropriate to attract new customers and be reflective of the company's personality?

Target audience

A specific client market the company wants to target, determined through research, while keeping the existing customers.

Tone of voice.

The tone of voice should reflect the company's personality.

CAN IT BE A BRIEF?
Filter system.

After writing the things I'm interested in I figured out a filter/funnel system.
This will help highlight the potential of sort of briefs I will be doing.

To do this I took each thing I was interested in and asked myself
why I interested in it and if it could be a brief and how.
