YCN BOARDS

OUGD203 EVALUATION.

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
Iʼve always wanted to try screen printing. In the previous module evaluations I frequently mentioned that I had wanted to experiment with different processes within design and always made excuses such as “Never had the time” This was down to poor management. In this module I have not only improved on my time management, I have also significally improved my screen printing skills. I think Iʼve applied these skills very successfully and personally, I think it shows in my finished designs. In previous modules things were left to the last minute and you could tell. Iʼve definitely improved and cannot wait to apply these newly developed and refined skills in the third year.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?
My main deliverable was a music zine. All the zines that I had encountered researching had a lo fi and DIY quality. It gave the zine a sense of sentimentality and you could tell thought had been put into them. I stuck with this lo-fi way of working and screen printed covers and posters for my own zine.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
The strengths that I can see in my work are those of consideration and time. As previously mentioned I had always left things to the last minute with past briefs but with my new time management and practical skills, I can begin to see the positive effect it has on my work.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?
There are a few prints, which didnʼt come out too well. It was my first time screen printing solo, so it was always going to be a hit and miss, as it always is with screen printing. Although having designs from different layers overlap in a quirky manner can look interesting, I felt I had let myself down. When designing the posters/covers, I made sure everything was gridded and lined up. Yet when it came to printing each layer on individual screens, there were a few lining up errors. With anything practical, screen printing skills progress the more times you do it, so next year Iʼve promised myself to screen print more and to not be lazy and to get my hands dirty.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

To try different print finishing techniques. I became a little over protective over my hand printed zines and had not wanted to ruin them by bashing them or pressing on them.
Upon looking at the prints I could see huge potential for a much more hand crafted end product using skills such as sewing, book binding and various other finishing techniques.

Work better as a team.
One of the key things in collaboration is communication.
Because Will and I had seperate deadlines to contend with (type and image) I felt like we were constantly distracted. This led to us not communicating as much as I had hoped thus less work was produced.

Continuous blogging.

This is quite a persistant one. Because I'm getting so into the practical work, I sometimes forget to blog it and say that naiave phrase 'I'll blog it tomorrow' When it came to blogging , I had forgotten something I had done a few days ago and the reasons I did something a certain way. Some days were better than others. During the last few weeks of the module my blogging significantly improved and I was uploading on the go. I plan to continue blogging everything I see and do in a summer blog. This way it will become second nature when I'm a third year.

Research more.

In order for a piece of design to communicate and solve a particular problem it must have research to back it up and justification. Particularly in the PRD brief, I knew the founder of the magazine and knew roughly what it was about but in hindsight I know more questions should have been asked.

Make mock ups.

Because of the pressure of deadline I jumped straight into designing the final product before trying it out first. In crits I had brought in a mock up version of the zine but there was only the one. There wasn't an opportunity for the people critting to try a whole selection of different prototypes.

Abandoning vector idea and focusing on paper bird.

Tuesday's crit was fairly positive
Those who critiqued the work said it didn't seem quite resolved yet and there should be more attention on the colourful birds. So after Tuesday's crit, me and Will spoke with Jane, and decided to abandon the vector idea.
We concluded that the vectors didn't fully communicate the texture and pure beauty of paper.
However, Will and I are still keeping the black and white envelope. We also settled on the langage/tone of voice of the deliverables.

Example -
The grey envelope will have type on it saying "In a grey world, everyone needs a splash of colour"

Monochrome

The idea of this is when the agency receives the mailout, it will be in a dull and grayscale shallow box whilst keeping the layout really appealing.
It's only until they open the box and find all this beautiful colourful content inside.

Thats the idea. So I've worked on some layouts for the box.

I've taken the previous colourful designs and basically turned off the saturation and thus extracting all the colour from the design. I've kept with the original layout with some scale changes with the address sticker.

Photographing the bird.

Today Will and I photographed the bird Will made. The photos came out so well. Will's volunteered to use his software skills to manipulate the bird photo and change the colour of some of them.

Mailout (revisted)

Taking the new designs onto the envelope of the mailout.
Still undecided on the format of the envelope but it's something that will
come into view once the envelopes content is sorted.

Firstly I took the design and applied it to a blue background (blue seems to be a core colour of the resolutions)

I then mirrored the image so it didn't look design on the landscape format.

Applying the information/address, again in a white rectangular box. This design works better than the photograph one. It just seems more dynamic and because it's not clearly obvious they're birds, it adds a subtle bit of mystery. This way agencies who receive this can ask themselves "What's this about?"

My only worry about the mailout is that it doesn't communicate colour to it's full potential.  I may need to add more than one colour on the design.
Mailout thumbnails.

Before I jump on the computer I need to understand the shape of the bird and see how it would on envelope format.

The ones where elements of the bird is showing through works really well. It sort of hints at what animal it is without giving too much away.
Vector bird.

Moving on from todays decision I've begun designing the invitation/mailout.
Taking inspiration from a origami bird laid flat, I've vectored around the shape of the bird using geometric shapes.

I then made it so the triangles would be more apparent by reversing the black and white.

Adding colour into the design.

This is really working so far and can see this being a main visual for the invite. The shape still suggests paper yet the real focus is on the colour.

Having a white outline of the bird on a red outline may expand that focus on the colour and perhaps even the stock of paper. I can see a coloured background really working in regards to layout.

It's beautiful,isn't it. IDEA.

As part of the marketing campaign Will and I wish to show not only that paper can be bent into all interesting and beautiful shapes but also show the appreciation for paper itself.
The reason people buy Fedrigoni paper is for the incredibly high quality paper. To communicate this we decided that the paper should speak for itself with no attention to type or image. The idea is to get the highest quality stock from Fedrigoni and print a tiny body of type in the left hand corner with the message "It's beautiful isn't it?"

Initial thumbnails.

Seeing as how we wish the paper to speak for itself as well as being bent, we wanted little attention to type and just focus on the paper.

These thumbnails show just how small we want the type and the way we wish to communicate the message that paper is beautiful. Notice the placement of the type, this is to reinforce the message.
We also added a possible paper fold that will make it clear that it's paper the message is about paper. The message reads "It's beautiful, isn't it?"

A quick mac mock up of what I've thumbnailed.
UPDATE - one thing I've come to realise with this idea is that it communicates the quality of the paper and not really the colour selection. Back to the brief.

DELIVERABLE LIST

A final list for the deliverables -

CREATIVE REVIEW AD - To fully appreciate traditional methods, we must first understand how messages are sent without the use of technology. The journey begins at creative review. We are fully aware that design agencies across the country are subscribed to the monthly magazine and to take full advantage of this fact, we have included a creative review ad promoting the event and will be our first deliverable.

MAILOUT - This mailout will be sent out to design agencies and creative minds alike.

EVENT proposal - To promote the Imaginative Colour selection tool, an event will be held at Fedrigoni's showroom in London with special guest Andy Singleton. The event will include a paper craft session with Andy to get people falling in love with paper all over again. Keeping with the theme "Let your imagination taking flight" the showroom will be decorated with beautifully hand crafted birds, crafted from the finest Fedrigoni paper and will be based on the colours of the imaginative range.

ON SCREEN PRESENCE -
Alongside out mailout and advertisements in CR online presence would be ideal to reinforce our campaign.

The main consideration throughout all of these delioverables is, consitsency, and they need to work well together.
Action plan - YCN Fedrigoni.

Whilst will is crafting the bird I thought I'd make an action plan so other things can be sorted.

Finalise list of deliverables - The brief asks for a fully integrated marketing campaign. Usually that would involve printed deliverables but also getting the word out there via web with the use of facebook and twitter etc. Will and I are very aware that we live in a digital age but we are doing a brief about paper so an idea is needed gfor us to share the information with others without using facebook and other social media sites.

Design layout for deliverables - After we have a list of deliverables we then need to then decide on the layout design and how we can keep it consistent throughout.

Brainstorming

Will came to my house today to speak about initial ideas for the brief.
We started from the very start and started listing every word that we associated with PAPER.
Whatever word that came to my head I noted down which is why there are some silly ones on there.

Some of my favourite words in the list are -

  • Fold
  • origami
  • wood
  • tree
  • fibre
  • tear
  • draw
  • print
  • cut
  • page

We started to think "What is paper?" did a little research and as we already knew, The raw material needed to make paper is Wood. This wood comes from the trees which grow on Earth. This way of thinking led us to come up with a keyword for the brief - Natural.
This word influences our design direction and whenever we run abit off track with the idea we shall remind ourlseves of the keyword.

The same was done for the word COLOUR -
These are the words that came to my mind

  • COLOUR -
  • COLOURFUL
  • CREATIVE
  • VISUAL
  • COLOUR THEORY
  • PAINT
  • BRIGHT
  • SPECTRUM
  • COLOUR THEORY
  • COLOUR SCIENCE.
After we had listed the words we looked at what we had. We came to abit of a block and decided to look at the brief once again. One of the words that stood out for me on the brief was IMAGINATION and IMAGINATIVE. We then had our second key word.

We then started to think of what we could create with those words and decided it had to be imaginative and have natural influences. Now that we had the words we could come up with a statement to sum our brief up. I came up with cheesy taglines such as - Let your imagination run wild and suggested that we could make paper wild animals. This wasn't to Will's liking but he then suggested that we could focus on a bird. It's been done before but not to a very high nor creative standard. Previous submissions included paper cranes and paper planes. We wanted to extend those ideas into something beautiful and keep pushing it. We finally decided on paper birds because birds are simply and naturally beautiful. They also symbolise strength and elegance. Words that can also be associated with Fedrigoni themselves.

We knew that if we wanted to do this, it had to be done well and we had to make something that separated us from the other submissions.

PROMOTING OURSELVES
looking for a partner

Today we were given just 2 hours to create a poster that represented ourselves as designers.

We then pinned our posters up as an advertisement of ourselves.
We were then asked to stick post it notes on who we liked and why?
and also what skills they could bring to a group.

Safe to say it all got abit manic.

I ended up with Will which I was really pleased about. Will has illustrator skills which I lack in and he also knows how to work with colour and craft.
