Timeline of space exploration

For this brief I intent to visualise the timeline of space exploration.
As previously mentioned I have a huge fascination for space. I've been interested in it
since I can remember. So I thought it was about time I visualise it.

I've already found a great source which goes up to the 5th December 2001

http://my.execpc.com/~culp/space/timeline.html

And another one that leads up to the current day and beyond.

The next step is to condense all the information into pinnacle moments in the timeline.
Example - First manned space flight, first man on moon, First satellite in space etcetc

A good idea will be to start from the very beginning

It could be argued that the V2 rocket used by Nazi Germany in 1942 was the first object in space but I wish to focus on orbital objects.

1 -
SPUTNIK 1

Sputnik 1 was the first artificial Earth satellite. The Soviet Union launched it into an elliptical low Earth orbit on 4 October 1957.

The Sputnik was the first man made object to orbit the Earth and started the Space Age.
