ULTIMATE 10
RATIONALE
# 1. I wish to work with a fine artist.
Being a 3rd year student is a fantastic
opportunity to collaborate with other 3rd years from other courses.
Working alongside students from courses such as fine art and fashion are great
ways of working with great content. This will also mean it would be a live
brief so I will be dealing with real clients and real deadlines. I also feel I
would benefit from designing a personal identity for a fine artist which would
hopefully gain her/him clients and employment which in turn gets my name out
there thus gaining me more work.
#2. Show my opinion of what
graphic design is through a clear and personal portfolio.
When showing my work to potential employees it’s
important to realize my portfolio won’t be the only one they would be looking
at.
Competition briefs are important as they give you an
opportunity to work to a real deadline and it makes you realize how cutthroat
the industry can be. However, my portfolio must be a reflection of who I am as
a designer and what I believe in. If the agency sees a conceptual brief that’s
come from my own thoughts etc, it would help me stand out amongst the others.
#3. Post graduation is there a “deadline” when it comes to jobs.
Will the later I leave getting a job affect my chances of landing one?
After graduation I would be one of 7,000+ Graphic design
graduates throughout the country. I know this and agencies also know this.
It’s this fact that makes Graphic Design is a cutthroat
industry. My concern is once I’ve left, all the jobs that I see/saw myself in,
would be taken.
#4. I want to explore the
relationship between architecture and Graphic design / Typography
Architecture has become a great interest of mine. Being a
visual person, I think it’s obvious why. Through research I found out that
graphic design shares a lot of common ground with architecture. To be more specific,
typography has a huge amount in common with architecture/ interior design, as
it’s about utilizing space. I wish to show this relationship by researching
well known architectural pioneers and comparing them to well known
typographers.
#5. Will having a lack of interest when it comes to web/on screen
design hold me back when it comes to employment?
Most of my work has been produced by various print
methods and I wish to show myself as a print based designer.
However I’m curious to see how this affects my chances of
employment. This year is a great opportunity to fully recognize the full
importance of web/screen design and how it relates to my practice.
#6. I want to design my own typeface.
This brief has come purely out of my fascination and
passion for type. Throughout these past few years of the course I’ve used
existing typefaces that have been typed up and the only hard work would be in
the kerning, tracking, layout considerations etc. So I’m very interested in the
process of designing a typeface from scratch. I’ve always been inspired by the
work of Wim Crouwel. In particular, his “New Alphabet”. This will also show agencies that I’m
interested in not only type layout but type construction itself. It would also
give me a greater understanding of how type functions, right down to the very
characteristic.
#7. CSS.
Contrary to what I said previously, I do understand the
importance of having a website. It’s easy to access and it’s another vehicle
for your work. I wish to gain a greater knowledge of css/html and learn how to
build a successful website from scratch.
#8. Getting hands on.
I’m gradually clinging onto manual processes such as
screen printing but I wish to extend that through book binding and paper
crafting. Some of the best designs I’ve seen utilize these techniques, which
can have a significant effect on what message you wish to communicate, and how
the audience interacts with my work.
#9. Attention to detail.
Being professional also means you need to make sure everything
is perfect. I must get into the habit of getting a peer/ tutor or agency to
check over my work for errors that I have missed. This will be something that
agencies will be noticing whilst looking through my portfolio in surgeries.
#10. Dissertation must reflect my own practice.
Whilst researching for my dissertation I noticed quite a
number of techniques advertising/brand companies use to this day to help sell
their products/selves. My work should
not only show my genuine interest of brands and how they work but also
incorporate techniques used by successful branding agencies
